Beyond Realism

Writer's picture: Janice GillJanice Gill

As someone who enjoys both abstract and realistic paintings, I sometimes find myself caught between a rock and a hard place. On the one hand those in the Abstract camp look askance at realistic work as they maintain it is not "high brow" enough. On the other hand those in the realism camp insinuate that abstract work shows no skill in draughtsmanship and it's proponents cannot draw.

It's a frustrating dichotomy that makes me think it is an advantage to have an alter ego. Maybe I should paint in different styles under different names. It is a common enough occurrence in the literary world after all.

What are your thoughts? Would you like an alter ego to take the strain when sitting in two camps is frowned upon? Why not share your stories in the comments below.

By the way, the painting above kind of sits on the fence itself, somewhere along the line from realism to abstraction that encompasses impressionism and abstract expressionism. Can you guess what it's about? I'll put the name of the painting in the comments :-)
